George Mayoral Cup 7’s gaining momentum

The organizing of the 2015 George Mayoral Cup 7’s is gaining momentum and is at an stage where the participating teams and fixtures have been confirmed in the lead up to what promises to be an action packed one day sevens rugby spectacle.

The tournament to be hosted on Saturday 05 December at Outeniqua Park in George has drawn interest from clubs as far afield as Cape Town that requested participation. It is currently however exclusive to George rugby clubs as the event is the brainchild of George’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Charles Standers and is co-hosted by the George Municipality, SWD Rugby Union and George Business Chamber.

“George is built on partnerships and the Mayoral Cup Rugby 7’s truly reflects the power of yet another well-cemented partnership between Business, Sport and Local Government in George,” said Alderman Standers.

The following teams have confirmed their participation: Rosedale, Crusaders, Maori’s, Blanco, Young Leaves, Black Lions, Progress, Young Roses, Pro Stars, NMMU, Uniondale, Silver Stars, Evergreens, Super Stars, George and United Stars.

Current SWD Premier League champions, Evergreens will be tough to beat and teams such as NMMU, Progress and Blanco will hope to put up a good showing with the rest of the teams. The great thing about Sevens Rugby though is that the playing field is a lot more level than the 15-a-side code and that some of the so-called smaller teams can cause quite a few upsets.

This is evident on international level as well and makes for great crowd participation where the underdogs are often backed to stake their claim.

The tournament is divided into four pools of four teams each. Each team will play two pool matches after which the top eight teams will advanceto the quarter finals where the knock-out matches will start. The first matches will kick-off at 08:30 on both the A and B fields. Matches are seven minutes a side with the exception of the final which is 10 minutes a side.

The prize-giving will be concluded by 5pm after which the spectators are invited to proceed to the George Lights Festival2015at Unity Park, along the Fan Walk down Langenhoven Roadunder the sound of the Pacaltsdorp Brass Band, to continue the festive activities.

Team sponsorships are up for grabs at only R2 500 per team, so local businesses are invited to get involved and to sponsor a team for a good cause. Team sponsorships will give the business naming rights, as well as radio and print media exposure, so it is excellent value for money. Interested businesses can contact the George Business Chamber on 044 874 3349.

Tickets are only R20 for adults and kids enter for free. Kick-off is at 8am and prize-giving will be concluded at 5pm to allow enough time to visit the George Lights Festival which is within walking distance from the stadium.

For more information about the event please contact the SWD Rugby Union on 044 873 0137 or visit their website www.swdeagles.co.za.
