George Municipal choir brings hope

The George municipal choir is more than just a singing group. The passionate 18-member choir has not only brought joy and entertainment to audiences, but also made a meaningful difference in the lives of its members.

Choir convenor Cilla Smith said the choir was established as part of a wellness programme for staff in 2010 and consisted of employees from most departments within the municipality and includes road workers, electricians, cleaners, clerks and administrative support staff. Members practice twice a week during their lunch breaks.

“For many members, this choir is a break away from the humdrum of their working lives and an opportunity to express their creativity and love of music. Here, it does not matter what position they have in the municipality, they are all just here for the music. The choir is also a support system and has in some cases even helped members to overcome drug addiction and other social problems,” said Ms Smith, who is a data processor at the municipality when she is not convening the choir.

The choir’s repertoire stretches across several genres of music including gospel, classical and contemporary. They are available to perform at local functions and can be booked for performances by contacting Cilla Smith on 062 732 4799.

The George Municipal Choir will be among several gospel bands and choirs performing at the interdenominational Celebration Gospel Festival at Outeniqua Stadium in George on Saturday, 21 October 2017.

Centring around messages of hope, honouring people helping those in need during the Garden Route fires and prayer for rain, the celebration is open to all. Entry is free of charge, but a donation of canned food is welcome. Participants can come and go from 9.30am-6.30pm and bring a picnic and own chairs.

Highlights include fire testimonials and messages of hope at 2pm and a mass choir performance at 5pm. Bands and choirs wanting to participate at the festival and in the mass choir can contact Cilla Smith on 062 732 4799.
