GO GEORGE attackers remain behind bars

The George Magistrate's Court has confirmed the postponement of bail applications for the 13 taxi drivers accused of torching four brand new rapid transport buses late last month.

According to the George Herald, the men, aged 26-47, would remain behind bars until the hearing commences tomorrow, after the state prosecutor fell ill before the matter was to continue last week.

They face charges ranging from public violence and intimidation, to possession of explosives after the GO GEORGE bus, which had been undergoing a trail run with a number of directors on-board, was prevented from leaving the township of Thembalethu on August 19th by disgruntled taxi drivers following a row over permits.

Pelted by stones, the bus was taken to Thembalethu police station where its tyres were later set on fire. Hours later, three more buses went up in flames at different locations across the city, while a further six suffered damaged bodywork and broken windows after being attacked with stones and bricks.
