Good rains recorded in Port Elizabeth, Graaf Reinett, East London - nothing in catchment areas

According to data released by the Port Elizabeth office of the South African Weather Service, the rains that fell on Monday and resulted in localised flooding in Port Elizabeth, did not fall where they are needed - in the catchment areas.

"Not much rain fell in the catchment areas, but a nice 62mm was recorded at 3rd Avenue Dip in Port Elizabeth," said Garth Sampson, South Africa Weather Service Client Liaison Officer for the Eastern Cape.

The rains come as good news after the Department of Water and Sanitation last week said that it was concerned by the water situation in the Eastern Cape because of the drought.

On Monday, manhole covers were lifting off on Port Elizabeth roads due to increased pressure from the rains and several roads were reportedly flooded.

However, just as the storm came, it also went with roads clearing only a few hours after the downpour.
