Graeme College cricket derby results against Port Alfred High, Union High, Woodridge Primary

The Graeme 1st XI cricket side celebrated a good double header win this weekend. In the initial stages of the CSA T20 competition, Graeme were fixtured against Port Alfred High School.

Graeme got off to the perfect start after they were sent in to bat, with Romario Fritz scoring 31. Jeremy Beyleveld took the game away from Port Alfred in a devastating knock of 83.

He was well supported by Mark Amm (38*) and Stefan Botha (27*). Graeme eventually finished on a daunting 202/4 after their 20 overs, which was a mountain too high for the Port Alfred side.

Port Alfred struggled to get going, and faced a well disciplined bowling attack. Port Alfred finished on 66/ 9 after their 20 overs with Graeme winning by 136 runs.

On Saturday, Graeme and Union battled it out in an unbelievable cricket match. The two young teams played a tough brand of cricket, in a game that would be decided with two balls left in the day.

Graeme batted superbly, with Romario Fritz (78) keeping the innings together. Various batters chipped in with Fritz, allowing Graeme to declare early on 220/7. It was a very pleasing debut for Aaron Richardson who ended up 30 not out, at the declaration.

Union responded perfectly to the declaration and made their intentions clear from the start, as they got off to a 50 run first wicket partnership. The run chase was looking brilliantly paced with three batters getting past 40.

Graeme built up the odd period of pressure, which led to a few wickets along the way. Mark Amm was superb in a marathon spell of 20 overs, which never let Union get away from Graeme. At 170/4 after 47 overs, Union needed 51 runs off the last 6 overs with 6 wickets in hand and batters set. The 50th over went for 20, but at the expense of one more wicket.

At this point, Union looked like they had done enough to claim a special victory. Liam Agnew and Lakhanya Sam though, added their own twist to the match with some dramatic death bowling. Agnew (4/32) picked up two late wickets and then bowled a maiden in the penultimate over.

Lakhanya Sam stepped up, with Union needing 11 off the last over, with two wickets left. He bowled an unbelievable over, hitting the top of off stump twice without conceding a run. Graeme won the tense encounter by 11 runs on the second last ball of the day.

Sam finished with 2/23. Both teams deserve a lot of credit for the positive nature in which the match was played. It was the perfect advert for how time cricket should be played.

The Graeme u14A side travelled to Port Alfred to play their u15A side, and found the age group difference a massive factor. The Port Alfred side batted first and made 290/8 in their 40 overs with Erron Vissagie taking 3/24.

Graeme went into bat and gave a good account of themselves in the run chase. Graeme were 200 all out with Fabio Rischbieter making 74 and Ethan Richardson 30. Graeme lost by 90 runs.

In the u15A match, Union batted first and were bowled out for 104. Raven Bush taking 4/25 and Sunny Makalima 4/39. GC chased it down with 4 wickets down, Ryan Bush (25 not out) and Raven Bush (19 not out) again batting well. GC won by 6 wickets

The 2nd XI had a poor outing against the Port Alfred 1st XI. After bowling PA  out for 135 with Dylan Reilly taking an impressive 6/17 and Riaan Labuschagne  taking 3/25, the Graeme side would have been pleased with themselves. However, Port Alfred dominated from then onwards bowling the seconds out for  61 and won by 75 runs.

The u11A side played Woodridge and scored a massive 278/6 in their 40 overs. Marcus Williams (53), Tyenu Cannon (51), Murray Tyson (42) and Ryan Stobbs (35) all batting well. In reply Woodridge were 166 all out with Ashton Williams claiming 3 for 19 and Saad Hayat 2 for 9. GC won by 112 runs.

The u13a side were also up against Woodridge. Graeme were superb on the day, bowling Woodridge out for 54 (Jack Botha claiming  3 for 5 and Lagon Oerson 3 for 18). Graeme batted away, and passed the score 8 wickets down and claimed a narrow victory.
