Grey Cricket Big Bash 2020 - Exciting IPL style cricket with celebrity coaches

Port Elizabeth - The second Powerade Grey Cricket Bash, will take place on the 27th, 28th and 29th of February this year. The foundations that were laid at last year’s inaugural event have seen interest in the Bash grow from strength to strength and it is now a firm fixture on the Grey High School Calendar.

Six teams will square off on the Pollock Oval at Grey High School where 72 players from U14 all the way up to the 1st XI have been divided into equal teams managed by renowned coaches.

The Celebrity Coaches include

  • Malibongwe Maketa, former Proteas Assistant Coach and Warriors Head Coach
  • Dave Callaghan and Pieter “Striker” Strydom, both former Proteas players (both included in the SA team to play in the Over 50’s World Cup in Cape Town in March this year, where Dave will also captain the side)
  • Rudi Second, NMB Giants Mzansi League and Warriors player (included in the SA Test Squad for India and recently the England Series).
  • Justin Kreusch, former Warriors cricketer, Border captain.
  • Michael Price, a retired EP and Warriors cricketer.

Each celebrity coach will be paired with a Grey High School coach including the Rector, Christian Erasmus.

Grey High School director of cricket, Michael Smith, said the tournament format will be the same as last year, where each innings will be 20 overs consisting of five balls per over. The change of ends will also take place every 5 overs as opposed to the conventional change after each over. The tournament will consist of special rules to even the playing field between the junior and senior players.

The tournament is a fantastic opportunity for the younger cricketers to play alongside their senior counterparts. The tournament is set to grow from strength and the experience gained by the younger players, along with the fact that they get to play on the Pollock Oval which is the official 1st XI home ground, is something they will treasure for a long time.

Teams were unveiled on Thursday 20 February at the Bash Auction where owners bid on both the teams and the coaching staff. The 2020 team owners are Avis Van Rental, Pam Golding PE/Greyvensteins Attorneys, Space TV/Market Force, Expert Kloppers, Discovery and Bearingco PE. An additional eight companies have bought double run zones along the boundary rope where if a four or six is hit into the sponsored area, the runs are doubled.

KFC has again sponsored the R10,000 Spectator One Hand Catch and Powerade continues into their second year of a three-year agreement as the main sponsor.

Expert Kloppers Klappers were crowned the Big Bash champions after a nail-biting affair against Space Market Force last year and will defend their title next weekend with their 2019 coaching team, Pieter Strydom assisted by Grey coach Fenner Barnard.

Saturday will see the knock-out fixtures take place with cross pool semi-finals before the final takes place later in the afternoon.

The event this year will include a social responsibility arm. Bins will be placed around the field where all those attending the Bash are encouraged to donate their pre-used cricket equipment. This equipment will be donated to aspiring young cricketers in the Walmer township.

The event is open to the public and will continue to serve to promote cricket in the region with exciting matches, DJ music, MC interviews and fun for the whole family. It starts at 14h15 on Thursday afternoon and continues from 08h00 to 17h00 on Friday and Saturday. Entrance is free.
