Grey High on Saturday won the ITEC Grey College Under-18 Water Polo Tournament in Bloemfontein, after winning five out of six games at the tournament, which included three straight wins in the knockout phase.

Grey were grouped with St. Davids (Johannesburg), St. Albans (Pretoria) and Kingswood (Grahamstown) in Pool D and won all, but the solitude 2-2 draw against St. Davids. The PE school beat St. Albans 6-3 and thrashed Kingswood 20-1 in their other two pool encounters.

They topped the pool with a superior goal-difference over the second-placed St. Davids and were set to face Northwood (Durban) in the quarter-finals – with the Durban side placing second in Pool A behind Reddam House (Cape Town). Grey High then beat Northwood 3-1, before edging Selborne (East London) 1-0 in the semi-final.

To claim the tournament title, Grey High then beat Clifton (Johannesburg) 6-2 in the final. East London’s representative, Selborne then claimed third place after beating Reddam 6-4 in the third/fourth playoff.

Stirling High, after winning the Port Rex Knockout Water Polo Tournament just a week prior, slumped after going down 8-5 to fellow East London counterparts, Selborne, in the quarter-finals. They then lost 6-2 to Northwood in the 5th/8th place playoff, before beating St. Davids 9-8 to claim 7th place at the tournament.

Goal-keeper of the tournament, defender of the tournament and coach of the tournament all were awarded to Grey High representatives, namely: Travis de Bruin (GK of the tournament), Philip Weyer-Henderson (Defender of the tournament) and Luke Crawford (Coach of the tournament).
