Gunmen open fire at ANC meeting in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth

Police in Port Elizabeth have launched investigations after gunmen allegedly opened fire at an African National Congress (ANC) meeting in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.

"Several shots were fired by two unknown gunmen at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton shortly after 11:00 on Sunday morning," explained police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"The motive is unknown at this stage although police suspect the aim was to disrupt an ANC meeting that was taking place in the first floor of the hall at the time of the incident."

He said that just after 11:00, two unknown men armed with firearms (hand guns) fired shots just outside the hall entrance.

"They then proceeded into the entrance hall and fired several more shots into the ceiling."

No persons were injured during the incident.

"The two suspects fled the scene on foot again afterwards," Capt Beetge said.

"Police are urging anybody with information that could assist police in identifying these suspects to contact the New Brighton police station at 082 303 0540 or phone 08600 10111."

Spat between ANC Nelson Mandela Bay region and ANC in the Eastern Cape

The news comes after the ANC in the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) announced that it was disbanding the ANC Nelson Mandela Bay Region Regional Executive Committee (REC) and replacing it with a Task Team.

However, the REC said that the ANC Eastern PEC had taken that decision prematurely and it had lobbied the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) to intervene.
