GWM Steed 5 Double cab review - as experienced by an ordinary driver

GWM Steed 5 double cab 2019 review by a driver like you and me

Car reviews are often written by professional motoring journalists, who test drive vehicles for a day or so and pass what’s considered expert opinion. This GWM Steed 5 Double Cab review was not; instead this review is from actual day-to-day experiences of a regular Steed 5 driver, Elma, who happens to be a colleague.

After being impressed while using the office’s Steed 5 Single Cab for years, she decided to buy a 2019 GWM steed 5 double cab for herself.

GWM entered the South African market in 2007 and it immediately redefined the term ‘value for money’ with its bakkies that gave established brands like Toyota, Ford and Nissan a run for their money. The Steed 5 bakkies range, in particular, has built an impressive reputation locally.

Today, now trading as Haval Motors South Africa, the brand is a choice for those wanting lower purchase prices, but also needing their performance and durability expectations met and exceeded – whether on the farm, the construction site or on a family outing.

Being the most affordable turbodiesel pickup on the market, the Steed 5 range of bakkies have indeed redefined the notion of value.

Whether the bakkie is for business or pleasure, the standard Steed 5 Double Cab ensures that occupant comfort is never in doubt.

“What I love most about the 2019 GWM Steed 5 double cab is the space and comfort,” she describes.

“It has the space of a car inside! There is more than enough head-, shoulder- and leg space even for the passengers in the back.

“The GWM also offers a number of storage spaces and has a neat padded centre armrest that doubles as a large storage box between the seats.”

All models also feature a heated rear window, power steering, leather upholstery, air-conditioning, electric windows and a radio/CD audio system (with USB support) – Elma is also happy with this.

GWM Steed 5 Double Cab performance/specs

The Steed 5 Double Cab comes with a choice of two engines. The entry level bakkie comes with GWM's proven 2.2-litre petrol engine that develops 78 kW and 190 Nm of torque and is paired with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The combined-cycle fuel consumption figure for this model is an economical 10,2 L/100 km.

The other option is GWM's popular 2.0-litre VGT (variable geometry turbo) diesel power plant that punches out a strong 105 kW and 310 Nm of torque. This engine is exclusively mated with a six-speed manual transmission. It boasts exceptionally low fuel consumption of only 8.3 L/100 km.

“I have not taken my new Steed 5 Double Cab bakkie on rough roads yet, but I have had a Steed 5 single cab as a work bakkie for a few years and drove it on the roughest roads of the Eastern Cape doing deliveries to often remote rural communities – it performed above expectations,” she adds.

“I never had any problems along the road with that Steed 5 bakkie! I have had mine for a couple of weeks now and have not had any problems as well.”

Steed 5 Double cab load capacity

It looks good, but that is not where the Steed 5 story ends. From the sporty grille, comprehensive colour coding (includes Sky Silver, Noble Grey and Titanium White), front and rear fog lamps, to its masculine and toned contours, the Steed 5 is a robust-looking machine.

Still, this hard worker can handle a one-tonne load with ease and has several tie-down points for your weekend camping gear, site equipment or deliveries.

“My work bakkie was a 1-tonner, which I did load - maybe sometimes a little bit more that a ton. It still impressed under that load. I am yet to fully load my new bakkie, but I have no doubt that it will still impress,” she says.

She adds that she loves the double insulation that protects the load bin against the heaviest loads you can throw its way.

Safety and security on GWM Steed 5 Double cab

Because this workhorse will also naturally double as a family bakkie, GWM has equipped the Steed 5 Double Cab 2,2-litre petrol and 2,0-litre VGT turbodiesel models with a comprehensive safety package that includes dual front airbags and ABS with EBD (except the 2.2 Double Cab).

Furthermore, all Steed 5 Double Cabs feature fog lamps to boost visibility during poor weather conditions and adjustable safety belts. Rear door child locks are also standard.

Central locking and an immobiliser are standard fitment on the bakkies.

Should you buy a GWM Steed 5 double cab?

“Yes!” says Elma.

“The customer service at Haval is excellent. They are the most helpful and friendliest people that I ever came across in a company in Port Elizabeth.

“Nothing seems too much to do to help. From their receptionist, Cathy; Robbie, the service manager, to their sales consultant, Andre Botha, I was impressed by their customer service. I can be very difficult when it comes to customer service! It’s just a pleasure to do business with Haval.”

The GWM Steed 5 Double Cab is available through GWM's extensive dealership network, currently boasting more than 45 outlets and service centres. To book a test drive, call GWM Port Elizabeth on 041 402 9000 or visit their showroom at 770 Govan Mbeki Ave, North End, Port Elizabeth, 6001.
