Hankey farm attack - suspect in robbery and rape case remanded to November

A 32-year-old male suspect appeared in the Hankey Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was arrested by police in connection with a farm attack that occurred in the Hankey area early this year.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, the case was remanded to 5 November to allow for further investigations.

“The suspect appeared on charges of house robbery, four charges of attempted murder; four charges of kidnapping; rape; illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition; theft and aggravated robbery,” she added.

Arrest after Hankey farm attack

The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit in Port Elizabeth was roped in to assist in tracing the suspects following attack that happened just before midnight on Saturday, 23 March 2018.

“On Wednesday, 28 March, the Provincial OCC, with the assistance of Palmietfontein detectives, arrested the 32-year-old suspect at Kwa Guna administrative area in the Nketlana Location, a few kilometres from the Lesotho border,” said police spokesperson Col Priscilla Naidu then.

“Some of the property taken from the incident was also recovered.”

How the Hankey farm attack happened

According to Col Naidu, it is alleged that on 23 March 2018, the 44-year-old victim and her children were attacked in their house by a gun-wielding suspect.

“During the ordeal, the woman was shot and money was withdrawn from an ATM,” she described.

“During the course of the investigation, several ‘persons of interest’ were questioned but later released.”

The Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok, commended the team for their excellent investigation and relentless pursuit of the suspect.
