Illegal strike action at Amatola Water

Employees at the Amatola Water Board on Friday embarked on what the board said was an illegal strike.

"The action is a result of employee grievances in relation to 2017/18 salary increases.

"The 2017/18 wage dispute has been referred by organised labour to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration. Consequently, there is no basis for the strike, other than to await the outcome of the CCMA," described Vuyo Zitumane, Chief Executive Officer of the Amatola Water Board.

"With regard to the 2018/19 salary increase, the board has approved the implementation of the 2018/19 collective wage agreement.

"The organisation is in the process of implementing a turnaround plan to address the current adverse financial situation which has led to the unaffordability of salary increases during the 2017/18 year."

Zitumane said that the employer will continue to engage with all key stakeholders to keep them abreast of developments and is pleased to advise that at this stage there is no disruption to services.

"Furthermore, the employer will maintain ongoing discussions with affected staff and organised labour in an effort to overcome the impasse."
