Inxuba Yethemba cuts back on service delivery yet splurges on Mayor and Speaker's cars: DA

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality would rather spend money on luxury vehicles for the Mayor and Speaker, than on skilled officials and the materials necessary to deliver services. That is according to the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape.

The DA on friday said that at a recent Budget Adjustment Meeting, the ANC tabled a report that would see the municipality with less staff and delivery materials, but with a new budget of R1.2 million for luxury vehicles.

"The ANC plan is to cut R6.3 million from Community Services (Refuse & Waste), the Technical Department (Roads, Electricity, Infrastructure) and Tourism, directly affecting delivery, and to spend some of these savings on luxury cars," said Handri Vorster, a DA Councillor in the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality.

"For a Municipality that is R70.8 million in debt, Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality cannot afford new luxury vehicles.

"These cuts to service delivery will leave the municipality with less staff, vehicles, and materials."

Vorster said that the DA has strongly opposed this ANC plan, but the ANC in council used its numbers to force through the adjustment budget.

"In contrast where the DA governs, like in Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane, we have stopped the purchase or lease of new luxury vehicles, as these are unnecessary expenses and public money must be spent on service delivery, not on politicians," she said.

"The DA will now write to the Mayor and Speaker themselves, urging them to do the honourable thing and decline these new luxury vehicles."
