Jazz legend bra Hugh Masekela passes away after battle with cancer

Government has confirmed that legendary South African jazz trumpeter, composer and singer, Hugh “BruhHugh” Masekela, passed way on Monday at the age of 78 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

South Africa's Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, said that the nation has lost a giant of the local music industry.

“A baobab tree has fallen; the nation has lost a one of a kind musician with the passing of Jazz legend bra Hugh Masekela," the Minister described.

“We can safely say bra Hugh was one of the great architects of Afro-Jazz and he uplifted the soul of our nation through his timeless music.”

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, also expressed condolences and said that he was saddened by the news.

“It is so sad to hear this. #BraHugh is incredible Son of the soil, who had incredible heart," Maimane said.

"One can’t think of SA without him, from liberation to freedom, his music transitioned us all. A true giant, whose tree shall be the shade of many generations, Robala ka kgotso (Rest in peace) Bra Hugh."
