King Williams Town man expected in court for illegal firearm

King Williams Town - A  King Williams Town man is expected in court on Tuesday after he was arrested by local police for possession of an illegal firearm.

"On Sunday, at about 12:30, members of the King Williams Town K9 Unit and Flying Squad followed up information about a vehicle that was said to have an unlicensed firearm," said police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

"They spotted a white Isuzu bakkie in town and chased it until it stopped at Ngxwalane location.

"The vehicle was searched and a magazine with 15 9mm rounds was recovered in the cabin hole."

She said that while chasing the car, police saw something being thrown out of the motor vehicle and an explosives dog named Chikka was used to search the open area.

"The dog reacted positive and a 9mm victor pistol with serial no.filed off was recoverd. The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition."

Capt Mawisa said that he will appear at the Zwelitsha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

King Williams Town SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Luntu, thanked the community for sharing valuable information that led to the arrest of the suspect.

"Police will quickly act on information received and ensure that perpetrators are behind bars," he added.
