Kingswood cricket derby report against Hudson Park

Over the course of last week, Kingswood College, based in Grahamstown, played a host of derby cricket matches against Hudson Park from East London, which were won on all extremities by both schools respectively.

It is often deemed in inter-school derby days, that whichever school wins the 1st team encounter, wins the derby day as a whole, irrespective of all of the other results, and Kingswood would debate that logic in the scheme of these recent results against Hudson.

In a low-scoring affair, the 1st XI clash saw Hudson bat first, and amass a gettable total of 167 all out – which the home side would have highly anticipated for achievement. Josh von Holdt (3/30), Aidan Hawkesworth (2/21) and Hilton Krige (2/28) were the pick of the bowlers for Kingswood.

Kingswood then had a meek outing in the middle, as they slumped to just 68 all out – losing by 99 runs. It is important to note though, that Hudson are currently ranked 11th in the country on the SA School Sports’ cricket rankings, with Kingswood slotting in at 54th.

The 2nd XI encounter was reversed, with Kingswood winning by a mammoth 230 runs, which saw three half-centurions, namely: Scott Stretton (68), Brad Sterling (58) and Shaun Botha (52) – with a team total of 300 all out.

Kingswood’s bowling then did well to restrict Hudson to just 70 all out, serviced by Sterling again (4/20) and Marc Landman (3/20).

Kingswood’s 3rd XI then won by eight wickets after successfully chasing down a target of 71, with Tiaan van Aardt scoring 40 not out.

The junior side of the schools then saw Kingswood’s U15’s slump by seven wickets, while their U14’s massacred Hudson by 219 runs, with stand-out batsmen accolated to Dami Odunuga (93) and Callum McGregor (51), with Odunuga also starring with the ball (4/26).
