Known Walmer criminal killed during tussle with Detective following tavern murder

An alleged murder suspect and well-known criminal in the Walmer area of Port Elizabeth was shot and killed minutes after he was suspected of killing a 32-year-old man in Walmer location on Saturday night.

"It is alleged that on Saturday night, at about 21:15, police were summoned to a murder outside a tavern in the location," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"On arrival, the body of a 32-year-old man was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his neck.

"Witnesses on the scene, provided information and the detectives, Walmer Crime Prevention members and the K9 unit went in search of the suspect."

Suspect killed in tussle with Detective

She said that at about 21:30, the suspect was spotted in between shacks in the Q area of Walmer location.

"The suspect pointed a firearm at a Detective officer, who was at very close range. The officer succeeded in pushing the suspect’s arm away and in so doing a shot went off from the suspect’s firearm causing him to shoot himself in the leg," Col Naidu described.

"It is further alleged that as the suspect went for his firearm, he was fatally wounded in his chest.

"Police have opened a case of murder, which will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)."

She said that the next of kin of both deceased in the two murders have yet to be notified.
