Kouga Municipality appeals to residents to help prevent fires

The Kouga Local Municipality has called on residents and visitors to help prevent runaway fires.

"Residents are requested to contact the fire department immediately when spotting a fire threat, even if it is still smoke, to the fire department," the municipality said.

The warning comes after a devastating fire that destroyed homes in St Francis Bay last week.

"Our fire station has reported that winds are expected to be gusting at 40 to 45 kilometres in the afternoon and this may increase chances of fanning fires in coastal towns," the municipality said.

"Where possible, avoid making fires this afternoon.

"You can reach the fire department by calling 042 200 2200 and follow the voice prompts or call the all-hour emergency number 042 291 0250."
