Kouga Municipality to hand out more title deeds on Mandela Day

The Kouga Local Municipality will once again be handing out title deeds, ending the desperate and long wait of hundreds of residents this week.

The programme will start on Wednesday, 18 July, when Nelson Mandela Day is commemorated.

The targeted areas will be the Humansorp suburbs of Gill Marcus, Vaaldam, old Arcadia and the Jeugkamp.

Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said more title deeds will be handed over in other areas over the next few months as well.

In March, late Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen issued 220 title deeds in Thornhill. Her successor said the municipality will continue issuing the documents until there isn’t a single one left.

“Beyond the title deeds we delivered in Thornhill under Mayor Van Lingen, I have found a further 1688 that have been lying around, some for over a decade, without being issued.

“We're informed that more are coming and we will issue as many as we can during this financial year,” he said.

Hendricks said it was symbolic that the title deeds would be given out on Mandela Day, while the previous batch was issued on Human Rights Day.

“Having a title deed gives someone a sense of dignity and opens up economic opportunities. It gives them the freedom to do renovations and rezoning of their properties. It could even enable them to approach financial institutions for funding of business ventures,” said Hendricks.

The Mayor will personally visit some households, in particular where there are elderly people, to do the handover while the main programme will take place at the Kruisfontein Civic Centre the same day.

The remainder of the title deeds will be handed over at Sea Vista, KwaNomzamo, Patensie, Hankey, Jeffreys Bay and Thornhill over the next few months.
