Kwazakhele High School gets needed textbooks

One of the most disadvantaged high schools in Port Elizabeth, got a boost when Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Nqaba Bhanga, in partnership with a book company, Rehab, handed over books on Friday.

The learners and staff at Kwazakhele High school were visibily appreciative of the kind gesture.

"We are very happy with the donation for our small library and it’s the second time that he visits this school to donate book," said one of the teachers, Miss Phumla Andries.

Andries added that this initiative will benefit learners a lot since libraries in the township close at 4pm.

“Our learners don’t get enough time to do their projects in the township libraries because they close very early. Now, that they have these books, things are going to be a lot better,” she described.

Councillor Bhanga said that education is a responsibility for all.

“We cannot stand by and watch while there are problems in the education of our children. Therefore, early this year, myself and the Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, discussed donating books to the school.

“We also have a group of social workers, who try and assist leaners. These efforts might be small in nature, but they are very big in terms of building the capacity of students,” Cllr Bhanga said.

Bhanga added that they have also been lobbying local companies to intervene in transporting learners while they are camping for exams.
