LATEST UPDATE on rains expected in Eastern Cape from Thursday

There is a promise for some welcome rainfall over the Eastern Cape from Thursday onwards, the Port Elizabeth office of the SA Weather Service said on Thursday.

"This will be of particular good news for the areas around Grahamstown/Makandla, Fort Beaufort who have experienced an exceptionally dry summer," described Garth Sampson, the SA Weather Service's Client Liaison Officer for the Eastern Cape.

"Generally, rainfall is expected over the entire Eastern Cape from Thursday into Monday with significant falls along the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior (Grahamstown/ Fort Beaufort,  Bisho and the former Transkei areas from Friday. 

"Significant falls are also expected over areas like Engcobo, Mount Fletcher, Matatiele, Maclear and Elliot."

Forecast for rain from Thursday is as follows:

Thursday 07/03/2019:

"A surface trough will result in thunderstorm development in places over the Eastern Cape interior," Sampson said.

"A cold front will pass south of Port Elizabeth in the afternoon with a surface high ridging in over the Eastern Cape bringing showers along the coast and adjacent interior by evening."

Friday 08/03/2019:

He said that the high will continue to extend its ridge over the Eastern Cape resulting in showers and rain over most parts of the province on Friday

"Approximately between 10 - 20mm can be expected in places along the coast  and the adjacent interior and eastern parts of the province."

Saturday 09/03/2019:

Sampson said; "With the high maintaining its position, together with an upper trough drawing moisture in over the Eastern Cape, showers and thundershowers are expected with rainfall of about 10-20mm in places along the coast and adjacent interior, as well as over the  the former Transkei, most expecialy over the OR Tambo District Municipality, Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Elundini Local Municipality, Senqu Local Municipality, Sakhisizwe LM and Engcobo LM."


"An upper low develops west of the country with a surface trough resulting in showers and thundershowers over the province," he added.

"Localised flooding can be expected in places along the wild coast (including East London), OR Tambo DM, Elundini LM, Senqu LM, Engcobo LM and Sakhisizwe LM."

Monday 11/03/2019: 

Sampson said that the upper low moves over Cape Town  with a deep surface trough over the western interior resulting in showers and thundershowers over the Eastern Cape where around 5 to 15mm of rainfall can be expected in places over the province.

"The forecast will be updated as and when changes are foreseen."
