Two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment after they were found guilty of raping an elderly woman, housebreaking and robbery by the Grahamstown High Court.

"It is alleged on the 03 December 2015, at 04:00 in the morning, two unknown suspects broke into a house at Takalani Township, in Elliot, and demanded money from an 80-year-old woman, who was alone with her 10-year-old grandson and two-year-old grandson," described police spokesperson, W/O Moitheri Bojabotseha.

"The grandmother, who is the victim did not give them money - therefore the suspects threatened her with a knife poking on her thighs while the other one was busy sexually abusing the old lady - even when she had her two-year-old grandson on her back.

"The second accused also sexually abused the old lady and when they were finished, they fled the scene."

W/O Bojabotseha said that, fourtunately, the 10-year-old grandson managed to identity the two suspects as they are from the same neighbourhood.

"A case of rape, housebreaking, theft and robbery was registered at Elliot police station," she added.

"Both accused persons were arrested and the case was transferred to the Regional Court where it was in the roll for two years until Advocate Nickey Turner come to Elliot Regional Court for administration purposes and she saw the victim with her 10-year-old grandson sitting in court."

W/O Bojabotseha said that Adv Turner then interviewed them and decided to take the matter to the Grahamstown High Court for prosecution.

"On Monday, the case was tried at the Grahamstown High Court were both accused persons were found guilty," she said.

"Before the presiding Judge sentenced them, he informed the court that the accused person didn't show any sign of remorse and they attacked the victim inside her house with no respect for elders, so a long jail term is a suitable sentence."

Accused number one - Siphesihle Walaza, was then handed a life sentence for rape, 15 years for robbery, five years for housebreaking.

Accused number two - Wanda July, was given 12 years for rape, 10 years for robbery and five years for housebreaking .

Elliot SAPS Cluster Commander, Col Matshidiso Gezani, commended the investigating officer as a woman, who loves her job and often goes the extra mile to collect meaningful evidence.

She also commended Advocate Turner for professionalism, hence the accused persons are going to stay in jail for long time.
