LIVE: Warriors playing for mere draw on final day against Cobras

Just when the Warriors looked to take the front foot against the Cape Cobras at the end of day two of their Sunfoil Series encounter at Newlands on Tuesday, the Port Elizabeth-based side regressed on day three and were weathered down in their bowling attack.

The Warriors were unable to break the standing third-wicket partnership between opener Pieter Malan and day two’s night watchman, Justin Ontong, when the two stood their ground for a further 42.2 overs, pairing a 177-run partnership, before Ontong’s wicket broke the ice for 69.

Malan specifically tamed the bowling attack, scoring an exemplary 195 runs, falling just shy of his double-century. Malan’s stint was also well-partnered by Aviwe Mgijima, who had both prolonged the home side’s innings, scoring a 111-run partnership. Mgijima went on to make a fine 90.

The Cobras’ tail-enders also delivered with the bat, with no.9 Jason Smith scoring 41 and no.10 Dane Piedt delivering a stern 51 not out, in what was a day’s lapse for the Warriors. The Cobras eventually declared on 530/8, with a 183-run lead.

With the fourth and final day having commenced on Thursday morning, the Warriors certainly have no victory in sight, with their best possible outcome playing for a draw, while the Cobras will look to take out the Warriors in one day’s play to register the first result in the 2017/18 Sunfoil Series so far.

Already one wicket down, the Warriors are currently stumbling on 36/1. Follow the live scoring here.
