Lonwabo Thinta: Brand Manager for Ouma Rusks

Lonwabo Thinta, Brand Manager for Ouma Rusks and Monati, has come an incredibly long way in her career. From being an undecided teen who strongly considered pursuing a career in IT, Lonwabo is one of the leading forces in the marketing industry today.

As fate would have it, Lonwabo was declined for a course in IT at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. A subsequent aptitude test proved that her personality was better suited for her second choice - marketing. Today, she has nine years’ working experience under her belt, and has worked for industry giant Pioneer Foods on the Sasko Flour Brand in Cape Town before joining the dynamic Ouma brand in January of 2016.

Although Lonwabo has only been with Ouma for nine months, she has enjoyed her fair share of highlights while working on this iconic brand. This includes transforming a brand that has so much heritage, and watching it evolve through its packaging, communication and innovation. “The best part of working on the Ouma brand, is witnessing how consumers have positively taken to the new product packaging and innovation after generations of there not being any rebranding taking place in the category,” she says.

Looking to the future, Lonwabo, the lastborn of four children, would like to do her MBA “for no reason other than to grow my career”. She would also like to improve her knowledge of the commercial side of the Ouma business, consumers’ perceptions of the brand, as well as consumers’ overall interaction with the brand.

Away from the office, this vivacious, loving and warm Soshanguve-born music lover has a passion for reading, watching her favourite series and spending time with her family, something which she describes as her “favourite pastime”. Her character has helped her get to where she is today, and she possesses the innate ability to uncompromisingly stay true to herself, while always delivering the best with a smile on her face.

As Lonwabo continues to grow in her position as Ouma’s Brand Manager, it is evident that her portfolio will continue to flourish under her diplomatic leadership style and propel her to even greater heights.
