Malesela gets discharged from hospital, injury concerns for Chippa ahead of NBC clash

Chippa United Head Coach, Dan Malesela, has been discharged from hospital after he was admitted last week for a health scare.

Malesela reportedly had a pain in his chest and it was suspected that the ailment was a heart problem. After being hospitalized for about a week, the Coach missed the trip to Chippa’s goalless draw against table leaders, Bidvest Wits in their PSL clash at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on Tuesday.

Ending the same way it started in an unanticipated match outcome, the Clever Boys headed to first place on the overall PSL standings with their one point scoring – topping the goal difference above Cape Town City, who are now second. Chippa remain 11th on the ABSA Premiership standings following the draw.

Malesela did not miss much, but has given time off to rehabilitate and fully recover and will also miss the Chilli Boys’ home game against the Witbank Spurs in their Nedbank Cup encounter at the NMB Stadium on Wednesday.

The Nedbank Cup, the country’s official knockout tournament comprising of 72 sides, is currently at the last-32 (following the qualifiers) and therefore, a loss cannot be on the cards for Chippa.

However, in a minor setback, Chilli Boys’ strikers, Rhulani Manzini and Andile Mbenyane are in doubt for the Wednesday’s clash – following injuries sustained in the meek goalless draw.

"Rhulani got a knock on his head towards the end of the game in East London, and as a precaution he will not be available for the Nedbank game. He was taken to hospital after the game for assessment and has not trained with the team since,” Mark Anderson, Chippa Physio told the club’s website.

Mbenyane picked up a knee injury following an awkward tackle in the same match.

“This was a grade left AC joint injury after falling awkwardly in a tackle. He like Rhulani is a doubt for the next game,” Anderson added.

For some back-up, Vusi Mncube and Bongani Kama are available for selection again, while Siya Ngubane and Katlego Mashego are back at training.

After precautionary measures were taken to a hamstring strain, Paseka Mako should return to the fold for this upcoming fixture.

The Nedbank Cup clash is set to take place next Wednesday, 15th March, at the NMB Stadium at 19:30 in a do or die encounter.
