Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 2-1 win over SuperSport United

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed three vital points and completed the league double over city rivals SuperSport United in a thrilling Tshwane Derby on Sunday afternoon.

SuperSport had the first chance of the game with Kudakwahse Mahachi testing Denis Onyango in goals. The opening thirty minutes saw a cagey affair as both sides were organised and looked to break the other down.

Downs broke the deadlock shortly after the half-hour mark, Tebogo Langerman’s cross from the left was met by Sibusiso Vilakazi, whose header was deflected into the path of Themba Zwane who reacted quickly to tap home.

Zwane’s goal would prove to be the difference as Downs headed into the break leading by a single goal.

SuperSport found their route to an equaliser after Andile Jali brought down Mahachi in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. United captain Dean Furman stepped up and slotted past Onyango in goals to bring the hosts level.

Downs restored their lead with twenty-five minutes to go in the second half, Thapelo Morena with a fine finish past Ronwen Williams in goals after a pin-point cross from Hlompho Kekana out wide.

Coach Pitso Mosimane then went on to deploy the fresh legs Phakamani Mahlambi and Tiyani Mabunda as he looked to seal the derby victory.

The win for The Brazilians sees them remain in second place, closing the gap to the top of the table as well as extend the lead over SuperSport in third place.
