Man arrested for illegal firearm possession while out on bail on another case

The vigilance of police officers when patrolling Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas is paying off  as yet another suspect was arrested  and a firearm confiscated by  Flying Squad members.

"It is alleged that on Saturday, at about 11:30, Flying Squad members were performing duties in the Bethelsdorp area when they noticed a suspicious male, who after seeing the police vehicle attempted to hastily retreat," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The members stopped their vehicle and on searching this person, a  revolver and five rounds of ammunition was found on him.

"The suspect (age unknown) is currently out on bail for a robbery case, which allegedly took place in Humewood in  April 2018."

She said that the suspect was detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition and will appear in court on Monday.

SAPS Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Maj Gen Thembisle Patekile, commended these members on their alertness and  "having an eye for suspicious persons especially in the Northern Areas where gang related activities are rife. The seizure of this firearm results in less crime being committed."
