Man arrested in connection with attempted robbery at East London butchery

A 45-year-old man is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate's Court on Monday for conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

"The suspect was arrested on Saturday at his farm in Mooiplaas in a joint operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team and the K9 unit," Hawks spokesperson,  Captain Anelisa Feni.

"His arrest is a sequel to an ongoing investigation relating to foiled robbery in July last year.

"It was established then that a group was planning to rob a reputable butchery in East London."

She said that members from Serious Organised Crime Investigation acted on the information and arrested Warren Isaacs (30), Sonwabile Mafanya (43) and Patson Ngcube-Ngcobo (40) in front of the butchery.

"Further investigations led to the arrest of two other suspects, Shirley Gunuza (55) and Alpercino Shearer (34) in East London on 26 July 2018," Capt Feni added.

"Additionally, three vehicles which were allegedly used by the accused were seized during August 2018.

"A joint operation by the Hawks, the Vehicle Identification Section and Public Order Policing units revealed that the Golf, the Ford Fiesta and a Ford Ranger were all stolen and hijacked in Gauteng."

All five suspects are still in custody.  The next court appearance will be on the 23rd of January 2019.
