Man due in Grahamstown court for possession of suspected stolen vehicle

A 47 year-old man is expected to appear before the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Thursday after he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen vehicle on Tuesday evening in Grahamstown.

According to the police, on Tuesday evening, whilst conducting a vehicle check point on the N2, police officers stopped a VW Scirocco with an "ND" registration. 

“A normal search was conducted whereby it was discovered that the vehicle had a fake licence disc,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that further investigations revealed that the vehicle was sought on a Mowbray case - it was reported stolen early this month. 

The 47-year old-driver was arrested for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle.

In an unrelated inicident, a 47-year-old male is also expected to appear before the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court after he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property on Friday, 7 July.

It is alleged that, local SAPS were conducting an integrated anti Rhino poaching vehicle check point, with local rangers and members of the vehicle identification section on Friday 7th July 2017, the team member stopped a vehicle that was travelling from Alice to Port Elizabeth on the R67.

“Whilst searching the truck, the team found a duvet cover filled with a roll of copper wire,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that the truck and the copper were seized and the driver was requested to furnish documentation to support that it was his truck that he was legally transporting the copper.

“Whilst awaiting information, investigators simultaneously contacted the company the suspect worked for as well as Eskom,” added Captain Govender.

On Wednesday, when the suspect arrived to claim the company vehicle he was arrested as the information that he had supplied was unsupported.

He was arrested and detained for possession of suspected stolen property.
