Man expected in court following armed robbery and shooting at Kwazakele shop

A 24-year-old suspect is expected in court on Thursday after he was arrested on Tuesday night after an armed robbery that took place at 18:45 at Save More Spaza shop in Kovu Street, Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth.

"Two armed suspects entered the shop and demanded money, cigarettes and cellphones. The suspects started to shoot at the shop owner, who attempted to hide in the shop and in the process a 25-year-old male that was in the shop to buy cigarettes was wounded in his leg," described police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"He fled out of the shop and ran down the street.

"A short distance away he flagged down a Kwazakele police vehicle, who was responding and on its way to the shooting at the shop."

Capt Beetge said that he quickly informed the police members of what happened, and on reaching the shop, the two suspects came running out of the shop.

"They fired shots at the police members, who in turn returned fire on the suspects, but managed to evade arrest by running between the houses."

Capt Beetge said that as soon as back up police vehicles arrived, a search for the suspects ensued.

"One 24-year-old suspect was then found hiding behind a house in Bucwa Street and after searchimg him, he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition."

The suspect was arrested and charged for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm.

"Further investigation will be conducted to also link him with the armed robbery and the attempted murder of the wounded 25-year-old male."
