Man expected in court following toy gun robbery at Port Elizabeth shop

A 25-year-old Port Elizabeth man will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of business robbery, attempted hijacking and pointing of a firearm.

"The arrest follows quick interaction and teamwork by a community member, Atlas security and the SAPS," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"It is alleged that on Tuesday afternoon, at about 16:00, the suspect entered a business premises in 4th Avenue, Newton Park, Port Elizabeth, and held the cashier at gunpoint.

"A community member walking past the shop heard the continuous sound of a Taser and when he looked into the shop, he noticed the suspect, with his face half-covered, threatening the 36-year-old complainant."

She said that he ran looking for help and that’s when he flagged down an Atlas security vehicle.

"At the same time, the suspect ran out of the shop and headed towards the corner of the road. The community member as well as Atlas security chased after him," Col Naidu said.

"It is further alleged that the suspect attempted to hijack a woman who had just turned into a parking lot. He was apprehended by the brave community member who was assisted by an Atlas security guard.

"SAPS Highway patrol members and Mount Road members arrived shortly afterwards and took the suspect into custody. The stolen money was also recovered."

It was later established that the gun used was a toy gun.

"Detectives are busy attempting to link the suspect to other robbery cases allegedly committed in the Kabega Park area."

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, congratulated the efforts of both the community and the security company for their quick reaction and immediate apprehension of the suspect.
