Man fatally stabs elderly East London woman accusing her of witchcraft

East London - East London police on Thursday night arrested a 34-year-old male suspect after he allegedly fatally stabbed an 84-year-old woman at Needs Camp, in East London.

According to police information, it is alleged that the suspect went to the deceased's place shouting and insulting her that she is a witch.

"The deceased was in her bedroom with grand children when the suspect entered and stabbed the deacesed with a screw driver on her upper body," described police spokesperson, Captain Hazel Mqala.

"He further pulled her to the ground and continued kicking her face and head.

"One of the grandchildren got a chance to get out and raised an alarm with the community."

Capt Mqala said that residents came to intervene by taking the screw driver, tied up the suspect and contacted the police.

"The community members organized transport and took the victim to Frere Hospital where she passed away," she said.

"A case of Murder has been opened and the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner condem the sensless murder of a defenceless women. The suspect will appear in court soon."
