Man handed life sentence for raping close relative, a teenager

A 31-year-old King Williams Town man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Zwelitsha Regional Court for rape.

"The conviction follows after the accused, Nkosindiphe Goni, who is related to the victim (a 16-year-old girl), sexually assaulted her from April 2017 and threatened her not to tell the family or he will kill her," said police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

"In June 2017, the victim reported to her grandmother, who went to the Police to report the case."

Goni, from Khalana Location, in Tamara, outside King Williams Town, was immediately arrested and charged for rape on 23 June 2017.

"He first appeared on 26 June 2017 at Zwelitsha Magistrate's Court and was out on bail for further investigation," added Capt Mawisa.

"In January 2018, he appeared at the Zwelitsha Magistrat's Court and the case was transferred to Zwelitsha Regional Court on the same day. After the transfer of a case to Regional Court, he appeared several times until the trial day on 23 May 2018."

She said that on Tuesday, Goni was found guilty and remanded in custody to Wednesday - when he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Commander for King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zitulele Mahlambeni, has welcomed the conviction and he also extended his appreciation to the Investigating Officer and the justice system for a job well done.

"This sentence will definitely send the message that the law will deal harshly with perpetrators of crime," he added.
