Man in court after R150 000 abalone bust in Aliwal North

A 34-year-old man is expected in court on Monday after he was arrested by Aliwal-North police on Friday, at 22:10, in possession of abalone.

"A white Nissan X-trail was stopped on the N6 road about 3km outside Aliwal-North.  It is alleged that the vehicle was from East London on the way to Johannesburg," said police spokesperson, Capt Ursula Roelofse.

"On further investigation, 17 bags of abalone were found inside the vehicle. 

"A 34-year-old suspect was arrested for the contravention of marine living resources Act 18/1998 Reg 36, possession of abalone."

She said that 2 326 de-shelled abalone units to the value of R150 000.00 and the vehicle were confiscated.

The suspect will appear in the Aliwal-North Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The Cluster Commander Brig Xakavu commended all members involved in the successful arrest and confiscation.

"Unity is strengh and we have reclaim the space occupied by the criminals!" he said.
