Man jailed for 20 years after abducting teen at gunpoint and raping her

The Willowvale Regional Magistrate's Court this week sentenced a 25-year-old man, Zubenathi Hlakaza, to 20 years behind bars for abducting a teenager at gunpoint and raping her last year.

Hlakaza was sentenced on Tuesday.

"It is alleged that the accused on 29 January 2016, at about 15:00, at Xholingada Location, Nxanxashe Village, Willowvale, found a 15-year-old girl at her home relaxing behind a rondal hut," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"He sent the unsuspecting girl to buy airtime from a local shop.

"He then followed her and forced her to another house, pointing the victim with a firearm."

Captain Manatha said that he raped the victim and later let her go.

"The victim reported the rape to her grandmother.

"A case of rape was registered at Willowvale Regional Magistrate's Court," he added.

"An investigator from Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigated the case.

"He traced and arrested the accused."

Eastern Cape Police welcomed the sentence and praised the Butterworth FCS Unit for properly investigating the case.

"The sentence will serve as a lesson to other would be abusers of women and children. Crimes against women and children remain the priority of the Eastern Cape Police."
