A 31-year-old man, Simphiwe Phukane, will spend a long time behind bars after he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Port Elizabeth High Court for raping a 12-year-old girl in the toilets at Dora Nginza Hospital on 11 March 2017.

According to police information, the 12-year-old girl was abducted while she was playing. Local residents assisted police in Phukane's arrest.

He was also handed a three-year sentence for assault and another one year sentence for abduction.

The court denied him leave to appeal the sentences, which came a few weeks away towards the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children.

Motherwell SAPS Cluster spokeperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said that the acting Motherwell SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Lindelwa Vellem, applauded the good investigation done by the investigations officer Riaan Botha, which led to the conviction.

“The protection of our women and children is one key focus areas and criminals that continue to rape and assault our young women should take note that long imprisonment awaits them,” she added.
