Uitenhage police appeal for leads after woman robbed in her home

Uitenhage - Police in Uitenhage, outside Port Elizabeth,  in conjunction with detectives from the Operational Command Centre have launched a manhunt for at least three suspects, who allegedly hit a home in Uitenhage on Wednesday morning.

"On Wednesday, at around 3:30pm, it is allleged that at least three men armed with firearms stormed into a house in Ross Gradwell Street, Uitenhage," said police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"The suspects allegedly threatened a 53-year-old woman and her two children with firearms."

He said that the suspects covered the victims with towels.

They then stole clothing, cellphones, jewellery, a laptop and cash before fleeing the scene.

"At this stage, it is unknown whether a getaway vehicle was used," Sgt Nkohli said.

"Police are investigating a case of house robbery and detectives are following up on all possible leads."

He urged anyone, who might be able to assist with any information, may contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Wouter Verwey on 084 846 2273 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

House robberies on trhe increase

In 2018, the number of home robberies across South Africa increased with an estimated 156 089 incidents of home robberies being recorded according to the Victims of Crime Survey released in November.

This effectively amounted to a 3% year-on-year increase compared to 2017.
