Mantis Group & Friends of the Art Museum team up again at fundraising gala

Port Elizabeth - Now in their second year, the Friends of the Art Museum are once again teaming up with the mantis Group and local designers for a gala event in order to help raise funds for the museum so that they can showcase more local artwork.

Last year, they raised a substantial amount of money for the first Gala in September, about R60 000, and this year they are hoping to top it! The theme for this year’s Gala event is; the Golden Thread.

The theme is meant to pay tribute to the important art of fabric making and how much our language is imbued with metaphors related to fabric as described in the book The Golden Thread by Kassia St Clair and Textiles The Whole Story by Beverly Gordon.

“The metaphors offered by fabric production also describe what we do at the Art Museum. A collection is a tapestry of the past and present. As curators, we find different threads to weave new stories about art and design that connect with people,” said Emma O’Brien, Director of the Nelson Mandela Bay Art Museum.

Local designers to showcase their work at Art Museum fundraising Gala

Not only is this event a great opportunity to raise funds for the art museum, it also helps to showcase the works of local designers and crafters.

The Art Museum will put on its best to play host to an audience of fashionably attired guests, offering a preview of the Art Museum's exciting fashion exhibition looking at the influence of traditional style in contemporary Fashion, a sit down Dinner and a runway show.

Established designer on the local and global scale and former PE girl, Jenni Button, has agreed to attend the Gala and showcase a collection. She will be supported by three of Nelson Mandela Bay’s innovative designers; Amanda Knots, Cleo Allison, Gugu Peteni and the stylish shoe designs of Nadine Murray of Kitibella Shoe Collection.

The Gala will take place on 22 August in the Art Hall of the Museum and will include a Black Tie Dinner and Designer Fashion Show.

All the designers this year are women as this Gala will also be considered a tribute to Women’s Month in August. The models for the event are women who took to the catwalk several years ago and are now either mothers, career women or both and still looking fabulous.

Seating is limited so make sure to book your spot as soon as possible. Tickets are R900 per person and can be purchased from Michelle Brown of Brown’s PR, email her at michelle.brown@axxess.co.za to book your seat.
