Mastertons, a city landmark

Mastertons have been producing coffee for Port Elizabethans since 1924 and their roastery in Russel Road has become a city landmark.

I have long been a fan of this great roaster and have enjoyed sampling their wonderful range of blends.

Ronald John “Jock” Masterton was the founder of the company and Ryler Masterton, his grandson, has now taken over the reins. Three generations of entrepreneurship and innovation later Ryler has brought his own dynamic enthusiasm to the Mastertons.

A few years ago, under Ryler’s guidance Mastertons opened a beautiful shop and offices in Parliament Street around the corner from their Russel Road premises. Not only did the new shop sell delicious, fresh coffee but they also offered a variety of coffee machines for the coffee connoisseur.

The company has now decided to move their outlet to Main Road, Walmer.

Location, Location

Ryler says, “Main Road in Walmer has become a hub of fine food and great coffee shops and we felt that moving there would be appropriate.”

He adds, “The new shop will be located between 6th and 7th Avenue and our full range of coffees, both ground and beans, will be available.”

I asked Ryler if they would be serving coffee from their new premises.

“We will not have a sit down coffee shop but customers will be able to taste our brewed coffees before making a purchase,” he said.

Opening date

The new shop is expected to open on 4 December, the 94th Anniversary of the opening of the first Mastertons.

To promote their new store Mastertons will be running a number of special offers. Watch this site for details and like their Facebook page and follow them on Twitter and Instagram to get up to the minute information on what the new store has to offer.
