Matatiele man busted, confesses to killing missing teacher and stealing her bakkie

A 28-year-old Matatiele man is expected in court after he was arrested by Mthatha police on Tuesday driving a vehicle belonging to a missing female teacher, whom he later confessed to have killed.

According to police spokesperson, Capt Khaya Tonjeni, at about 19:00, on Tuesday, a member of the woman’s church came to the Katkop CSC in Matatiele to report that one of their members was allegedly missing. 

“She was described as being a 31-year-old teacher, who attended a church at Tshikitsha location, Katkop, in Matatiele” he said.

“She was last seen driving a Toyota Liverpool fitted with a canopy white in colour, with Reg. BTV485EC at approximately 15:35, but she never arrived at her home.

“He mother tried to call her several times, but in vain.”

Suspect tracked down after bakkies trackign device activated

Capt Tonjeni said that police swiftly attended to the complaint as it was viewed as serious.

“The victim’s brother activated the tracker and upon activating tracker, it indicated that the vehicle was at Libonde vicinity - an area near Mthatha,” he described.

“A Warrant Officer, who was on duty at the Mthatha Flying Squard really assisted a lot and with his team's swift reaction the vehicle was recovered with one suspect, aged 28 years, from Tshikitsha location, Katkop, who alleged to be visiting his relatives at Libode.”

Capt Tonjeni said that both cellphones belonging to the victim were inside the vehicle.

“Upon questioning the suspect, he said the owner of the vehicle gave him a vehicle to keep it safe as she was going somewhere with her boyfriend identified as Akhona.

“Katkop members were sent to Akhona’s place, but the wife said he is at Mzimkhulu,” he added.

“Akhona was called and he confirmed that he knew the lady, but he is not romantically involved with her. He also confirmed the he is currently at Mzimkhulu and the suspect is lying about him being with the missing teacher.”

He said that was when police officers from Katkop requested Flying Squad members to meet them so that they can hand over the suspect and the evidence that they had collected in the case.

“When Katkop police interviewed the suspect further, he cooperated with police and was willing to show the police where he killed the victim and dumped her body,” Capt Tonjeni.

“The body was recovered with visible signs of being strangled to death.

“K9 search and rescue were summoned and swiftly attended to the matter.

“A 72-hr activation plan was put in place and within 24hrs a lot of ground was covered.”

The suspect is now expected to appear in the Mt Fletcher Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of murder and vehicle hijacking.

Matatiele Cluster Commander, Brigadier Nompumelelo Majikizela, thanked the team, who worked successfully “without a wink of sleep” resulting in the arrest of the suspect.

"Your team work cannot go unnoticed," she retorted.
