Matric Results 2018: Eastern Cape to honour late Mandla Makupula with maths award

Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mlungisi Mvoko, will on Friday morning hold a media briefing to announce how the Eastern Cape fared in the 2018 Matric Results and announce the Mandla Makupula maths award at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC).

The briefing comes a day after Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, on Thursday delivered some good news for Eastern Cape.

For the first time in so many years, the Eastern Cape is not at the bottom of the class after registering a 70.6% matric pass rate, an improvement of 5.6% from 2017 – the largest improvement in the country.

The Nelson Mandela Bay was also announced as the Leading District in the Province.

Siphamandla Cibi from Richard Varha in Dimbaza took third place in the Technical Physical Science category nationally.

"We also congratulate Mihlali Fipaza from Bashee Comprensive School in Dutywa for being one of the National top achievers," the Eastern Cape Department of Education tweeted.

"This year, the ECDOE will also be introducing the Mandla Makupula Maths and Science Award. Waiting in anticipation to see who will get this award."

The award will honour the late Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, who would have been proud to see the Eastern Cape's achievement.

He passed away in October as learners prepared to write the 2018 Matric exams.
