Mayor and NMB Libraries warm up the needy in Madiba's memory

Port Elizabeth - As part of celebrating the giving spirit of former President and founding father of our democracy, Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Library Section and Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, handed over more than 600 knitted items to various charities on Friday.

Among the recipients of the  knitted items - scarves, jerseys,  hats, etc.  - were local old age homes and children's safety homes.
The drivers of the campaign were employees from all 24 municipal libraries, who collected or bought wool and knit different items as part of Mandela Month celebrations.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony held in City Hall, Executive Mayor Bobani emphasised the crucial role that libraries play in society.

"Libraries are the cornerstone of a fully empowered community. They give people an opportunity to expand their knowledge and an access to empowering information.

"I would like to thank the employees for this kind gesture. This is what Tata Mandela stood for: changing the lives of those who are less fortunate than we are," said Executive Mayor Bobani.
