Mayor says rising Eastern Cape COVID-19 cases a concern

Port Elizabeth - The Acting Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Thsonono Buyeye, says the Metro has noted with concern the escalation in the number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the Eastern Cape Province.

Over 4 324 people have tested positive for the virus in the province.

"This comes as we learnt of the COVID-19 results of my colleague, OR Tambo Executive Mayor Cllr Thokozil Sokanyile, who tested positive on Wednesday," Buyeye said.

"My colleague, the Executive Mayor of the Amathole District Municipality, Cllr Khanyile KC Maneli, also recently lost his wife Matilda Maneli to the virus. May her soul rest in peace.

"On noting the positive results of Mayor Sokanyile, we would like to wish her a speedy recovery during this time."

Buyeye said that Mayors, Councillors and Ward Committee members are the foot soldiers entrusted by government and communities to lead from the front in the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This frontline fight carries a high risk of coming across this invisible enemy. As we continue with the fight on the ground of making sure that the people of this beautiful Province are safe, let us remember that our safety is equally important," he described.

"We need all Councillors safe and healthy, as they play a critical role during this difficult time."
