Mayor Trollip leads delegation to initiation areas after first local initiate death reported

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, which said it prides itself as one of the safest areas when it comes to circumcision/initiation, expressed its shock on Tuesday after it received news of the death on an initiate in the Uitenhage circumcision area.

"Although the details are still sketchy, the Deputy Executive Mayor, whom the Circumcision Custom falls under as he is also MMC for Public Health, has expressed his shock and sadness about the incident," said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Communications and Media Management Officer, Mthubanzi Mniki.

"Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, had and his Deputy, Mongameli Bobani, had already planned a visit to the circumcision/initiation areas across the metro to assess the progress made in relation to safety and hygiene issues in Circumcision/Initiation areas.

"Now the planned visit will include an investigation on the death of the initiate and plans on how to avoid such incidents from happening again."

Mniki said that incidents of crime where initiates and their assistants have been robbed of money, food and other valuable items have also been reported in the Uitenhage area.

The visit will take place on Wednesday afternoon at the Uitenhage Matanzima initiation area - where reported crime incidents  and the death of an initiate happened, as well as the Motherwell Nu 5 initiation area.
