Mcebisi Jonas no longer an ANC MP

Former Deputy Minister of Finance and Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Mcebis Jonas, resigned from his position as an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament as of 31 March 2017 - the office of the ANC chief whip confirmed on Thursday.

“Comrade Jonas has served both as deputy minister and MP with absolute distinction and dedication,” the office of the ANC chief whip, Jackson Mthembu, said.

The announcement comes after Jonas and former Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, were unceremoniously dismissed from President Jacob Zuma's Cabinet.

Last week, President Zuma who also fired Tourism Minister, Derek Hanekom, Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, and Public Service and Administration Minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodiwhen, said he made changes to the National Executive "in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness".

On Wednesday, Peters also announced that she had resigned from her seat as an ANC MP.

The ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) has since pointed out that a "breakdown" in the relationship between Gordhan and Zuma led to Gordhan's firing - but no reason has been given yet for Jonas’ removal from the ministry.

There are now calls for Zuma to resign over the dismissals.

It remains to be seen what is in store for Jonas and Gordhan, who have also encouraged South Africans to rise up in light of the recent political drama in the country.
