MEC Bayeni to launch OR Tambo District Academy of Sport in Mthatha

Mthatha - The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Fezeka Bayeni is on Thursday expected to launch the O.R. Tambo District Academy of Sport in Mthatha.  

"The purpose of the district academy is to develop excellence in sport through the coordination and facilitation of services for athletes, coaches, officials and administrators in performing optimally at national and international level," said DSRAC spokesperson, Andile Nduna.

"The Eastern Cape Academy of Sport (ECAS) office is the controlling entity for eight Satellite Academies of Sport which serves the population of Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Metro, Sarah Baartman, Amathole, Chris Hani, OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi Districts.  

"Furthermore, the ECAS is desirous of establishing District Academy Hub’s for all the 8 District offices throughout the province, including the Chris Hani District Academy that will be opened on Friday, 14 February 2020 in Queens College, Komani."

Nduna said that the District Academies are ‘Community Academies’ managed through the guidance of the ECAS office and will act as a feeder to the provincial Academy Programmes.
