MEC Mlungisi Mvoko to hand over R20 million MPCC in Motherwell

Residents of Motherwell, in Port Elizabeth, will be able to have access to much-needed services and a multi-purpose facility to the tune of over R20 million when the Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mvoko, hands over the Multi-Purpose Community Centre (MPCC) on Thursday.

"The MEC will officially handover over the newly built multi-million rand MPCC in Motherwell’s NU29 to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, for community use," described Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements, Phiwokuhle Soga.

"The centre is situated within close proximity to the community and will bring quality services closer to the area, cutting down on travelling expenses while also offering a state-of-the-art recreational space for the youth.

"Motherwell is the biggest settlement in Port Elizabeth in terms of population and land space."

Motherwell MPCC named after Siphiwo Mthimkhulu

She said that the centre is named after the late youth activist, Siphiwo Mthimkhulu, who was born in 1960 in the KwaZakhele township of Port Elizabeth.

"In his short lived life, Mthimkhulu played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle and youth activism," Soga said.

"The MPCC, constructed at a total cost of R20 658 000, consists of a multi-purpose hall, offices, bathroom, change rooms, kitchen, tennis court, netball court and outside offices for government departments with most office space being dedicated to health services as well as a library and parking bays for community use."

While the Department of Human Settlements receives a budget primarily for housing delivery, it has become more imperative that the houses are part of a community and that community requires social amenities in its development.

"Therefore, the MPCC serves as a cornerstone facility to generate social togetherness and community life."
