MEC Mvoko sends condolences after 7-year-old drowns at Central Primary School

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mlungisi Mvoko, on Tuesday extended the Department's heartfelt condolences after a 7-year-old Grade 1 learner at Central Primary School in King Williams Town drowned at the school in the morning.

"The school held it's Superstars Summer Pool Picnic for 28 learners this morning at 11 in recognition of learners who have done well academically," the Eastern Cape Department of Education said.

"Two teachers, including the swimming coach were deployed to supervise the learners.

"Whilst responding to report of injury (facial bruising that had occurred earlier) for another Grade R learner, the supervisors were informed of a learner swimming face down."

It said that a supervisor carried her out of the pool whilst and paramedics were summoned immediately.

"Unfortunately the paramedics could not resuscitate her. The parents were called and were informed of the tragedy."

It added that the head of Education Social Support Services immediately visited the school and called in additional psychological support and counselling services for the learners and teachers.

Another team will immediately visit the family of the learner with more support to be determined in the short term.

The drowning at Central Primary School comes, just days after six learners in Mt Fletcher drowned while crossing a flooded on their way home from school.

On the day of the incident, on Thursday, police managed to recover four bodies - and only managed to recover the last body on Monday.

Expressing his shock, MEC Mvoko said: "This is a tragic accident that has befallen the entire education family. Our hearts are extremely sore, notwithstanding the other six learners that we recently lost in Mt Fletcher last week.

"We pledge to support the family and the school as best we can under the circumstances."

Further details will be released after the police have conducted their preliminary assessment.
