MEC Pieters to handover new houses to shack dwellers in Jeffreys Bay

Jeffreys Bay - The shack dwellers of Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Kouga Local Municipality, will receive new houses from the Human Settlements MEC, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, on Saturday.

"A total of 33 houses will be handed over, providing the residents with a safe environment, basic services and access to economic opportunities," said Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements Spokesperson, Masiza Mazizi.

"The families have benefitted from the Department’s Pellsrus 220 Housing project which entails the provision of services and construction of 220 houses.

"The budget set for the entire project is R35 million. A total of 130 houses have been completed in the project thus far with some beneficiaries already moved in."

Mazizi said that the Pellsrus beneficiaries had been living under poor conditions in shacks in informal settlements and some in backyards.

"One of the beneficiaries to receive a new home on the day is 58-year-old Nkosinathi Ntenda, who is the most destitute and needy. Houses are usually handed over without furniture provided, however Mr Ntende will receive some furniture, donated by Ikhaya Development Trust, given his needy condition," he added.

"The 40m² sized houses are all ready for occupation and include, two bedrooms, an equipped bathroom and an open plan lounge and kitchen area. The houses are plastered and painted both on the inside and the outside, fitted with electrical plugs and lights.

"Other finishes include a roman tiled roof, an insulated 6.3mm thick ceiling and a flush toilet."
