MEC to engage SANTACO, bus companies over fare hikes

Bhisho - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport on Monday said that it has noted that cash-strapped commuters have been pinned into an even tighter financial corner as reports of massive fare hikes emerge.

"Both taxis and busses stand accused of this crime," the Department said.

"Aggrieved passengers have called the Eastern Cape Dept of  Transport’s call centre while others took to social media to expose this illegal practice."

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, has come out hard against those involved in this illegal practice, saying that such action is tantamount to extortion.

Tikana-Gxothiwe has also pledged to engage both the South African National Taxi Council (Santacoand the bus companies mentioned in these reports.
