Mercedes’ X6 rival arrives

Aimed squarely at taking the fight to the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz has released pricing and spec details of its all-new GLE coupe SUV.

Based on the same platform as the soon to be launched GLE, previously known as the M-class, the newcomer is claimed to blend “the sporty nature of a coupe with the characteristics of a robust SUV”.

Measuring 4 900 mm in length and standing 1 731 mm tall with a width of 2 003 mm, the newcomer will initially be available in two models consisting of two turbo petrol and one turbodiesel, all featuring Benz’s 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system.

Known internally as the C292, the GLE coupe features a revised Airmatic suspension system with a variable damping system known as ADS plus, that can be adjusted to suit the setting on the Dynamic Select Driving mode.

Consisting of five modes; Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport+, the latter allows for the changing of steering and throttle response as well as gear changes to suit prevailing conditions. In addition, the mid-range GLE 450 AMG also features a torque biased 4Matic setup that sends most of its power to the rear wheels.

Starting off the range, the base GLE 350d comes fitted with Mercedes’ familiar 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine that produces 190 kW and 620 N.m of torque. Linked to a 9G-Tonic automatic transmission, Benz’s claims the oil burner will reach 100 km/h in 7.0 secs before topping out at 226 km/h. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.2 L/100 km and emissions at 187 g/km.

Moving one up, the aforementioned GLE 450 AMG uses a 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 petrol that churns out 270 kW and 520 N.m of torque. Again fitted with the 9G-Tronic box, top speed is limited to 250 km/h with 100 km/h reached in 5.7 secs. Mercedes claims a fuel consumption figure of 8.9 L/100 km and emissions of 209 g/km.

Capping of the range, the fire breathing AMG GLE 63 S uses the same 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 as the E63 and S63, tuned to deliver 430 kW and a monstrous 760 N.m of torque. Unlike the lesser models, the power is send via a seven-speed automatic transmission due to the nine-speed being unable to cope of the amount of torque.

Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h dash of 4.2 secs and a top speed limited to 250 km/h. Fuel consumption comes in at 11.9 L/100 km and emissions to 278 g/km.

A six year / 100 000 km maintenance plan is standard on all models.
